Ocoee River Carnage Vault
Warning: The videos below feature real flips, swims, and 'dump-trucks' on the Ocoee River (and beyond). While carnage is often the highlight of the trip for spectators, it reminds us to respect the river.
Ocoee River Chaos
From the Olympic Course to the Middle Ocoee, here is what happens when gravity takes the wheel. Whitewater boating is like a dance with the river. If you fall out of step she may beat you down. Remember the river is far stronger than mere mortals.
The Ultimate Carnage Reel
This isn't just a highlight reel; it's a physics lesson in hydraulic power. We start strong with classic "dump truck" moves at Godzilla, where the river decides to empty the boat for us. You'll see rafts getting completely worked in the hydraulic at Humongous and the chaotic consequences of missing the line at the bottom ledge of Broken Nose.
The video also highlights some unintentional freestyle kayaking in the "Double Suck" hole—it earns its name here. We wrap up with some lighter moments at Cat's Pajamas (Torpedo), proving that even the "easy" rapids can catch you off guard.

4th of July Fireworks (On the River)
The 4th of July on the Ocoee is legendary for two things: massive crowds and massive chaos. This footage captures the holiday mayhem perfectly, featuring back-to-back runs at Godzilla and Humongous where high traffic turns simple lines into total yard sales. Watch for the "Crazy Canadian" open boater running the meat of the rapid—a rare sight in a single-blade canoe.
We also document the infamous "parking lot" at Surprise Ledge on the Middle Ocoee. When the river is crowded, pins become a spectator sport.
Rookie Guide Fails
Everyone starts somewhere, and the Ocoee is a tough teacher. This compilation focuses on rookie guide training, where we learn the hard way that the river always wins. You'll see R2 (two-person) teams struggling to keep it straight, resulting in gnarly stalls at Godzilla that turn into backwards surfs and eventual swims.
Bonus: Class V Green River Carnage
The Ocoee is fun, but the Green River Narrows located in Western North Carolina is a different beast. This is steep creeking at its finest (and most painful). I got my beatdown on the Green during Hurricane Helene.
"Go Left and Die" (NASCAR Edit)
Now we leave the Ocoee for the Green River Narrows, steep creeking's main stage. The star here is the infamous "Go Left and Die" rapid. This isn't just rafting; this is Class V kayaking where the consequences are real. We document relentless beatdowns in the notch, including self-rescues from log pins and repeated "epic surfs" that hold boaters captive.
22nd Green Race Beatdowns
The carnage continues with the 22nd Green Race. The crowds are bigger, the adrenaline is higher, and the mistakes are costlier. This footage captures the "Go Left" spectator gauntlet and the technical failures that end runs early, including bad "head checks"—looking the wrong way at the wrong time—that lead to instant flips.
