Hydrology and Hazards of Table Saw Rapid

Watch on YouTube: Hydrology and Hazards of Table Saw on the Middle Ocoee Part 1 of 2 Video

301 - Ocoee River Hydrology and Hazards covers many of the rapids of the Ocoee River. This article covers Table Saw rapid on the Middle Ocoee. Table Saw is the second of the two highest-rated rapids on the Middle Ocoee. Both Broken Nose and Table Saw are rated class III+ at normal flows between 1,200 and 1,600 cfs.

The video above features a lot of information of interest, especially to raft guides. The hydrology of Table Saw is examined and explained. Table Saw is the steepest rapid on the Middle Ocoee and likely the entire Ocoee River. The best-known hazard here is Prudential Rock. This rock does have a sieve, although the hole is under the waterline even at low water. Additionally, the rock is quite undercut.

Prudential Rock & Subsurface Hazards

Table Saw features many eddies of interest to kayakers. Rafters, on the other hand, want to be certain to maintain a left angle as they crash through the breaking wave at the top. Failure to maintain this angle will result in hitting or pinning at Prudential Rock. Unpinning a raft here can be tricky.

Also, be aware of the Guide Ejector wave, as it can kick or pop you out of the raft?intentionally or otherwise. Losing your position here will likely blow your entry angle, causing your raft to crash directly into Prudential Rock.

Critical Safety Warning: Ropes & Rescue

A tragic accident occurred at Table Saw in 2019. A senior guide hit Prudential Rock, causing several guests to swim. A rookie guide from another company attempted a rescue by throwing a rope but was unable to maintain his grip. Sadly, the loose rope entangled one of the swimmers, resulting in a fatality.

CRITICAL SAFETY RULE: Ropes can introduce new hazards into the scene. Never throw a rope if you are unsure you can hold on to it! If you need backup, ask for it. Do not bring improper equipment (small diameter ropes) on the river.

About Fast Fred

I am Fast Fred Ruddock. I don't just guide the Ocoee; I study it. I compiled the Ocoee River Guidebook to help trainees and boaters understand the technical hydrology behind the fun. My approach to the water is built on a foundation of precision: I spent my early career as an electrician in shipyards and industrial construction, which funded my education and eventual move into Information Technology.

I earned multiple degrees in IT and spent over 20 years in Higher Education and public service before transitioning to the river full-time. My technical progression was rapid; I was successfully navigating Class V whitewater well before I formally earned my ACA Certification as a Kayak Instructor or became a professional guide. This deep, practical experience is the lens through which I analyze every rapid on the river.

Current Status: For years, I have lived a frugal lifestyle in Ecuador during the Tennessee off-seasons, returning each summer to guide on the Ocoee for Teal Team Six at Ocoee Watersports. After losing my home in North Carolina to Hurricane Helene in late 2024, I executed a "Hard Reset." What began as a seasonal habit has become a survival strategy as I seek permanent legal residency in Ecuador.
