Where to Stay in or near Otavalo: Flying Donkey Hostal & Private Apartment

If you think budget travel requires a vow of poverty and a lumpy mattress, you haven't been paying attention.

From rural retreats in Yambiro to rooftop views in the heart of town, finding the right "sweet digs" in Otavalo is the key to mastering the Ecuadorian highlands without draining your gas money. Whether you are looking for the social friction of a high-end hostel or the quiet dignity of a private flat, Otavalo offers a spectrum of shelter for the discerning nomad.

Sweet Digs above Otavalo with a View

This house belongs to a sweet couple I call friends, and it serves as a masterclass in why I advocate for house-sitting and private rentals. I don't always stay in spartan accommodations; sometimes, by playing my cards right, I fare much better than I do back home in the USA. This flat had the holy trinity: a supportive bed, a functional bathroom, and a kitchen that actually invites you to cook.

Living like a local—even for a week—changes your perspective. Instead of eating overpriced "tourist fuel," I enjoyed cooking fine meals with fresh ingredients hauled up from the local mercado in Otavalo. There is a certain rugged satisfaction in knowing your way around a foreign grocery stall as well as you know a Class IV rapid.

The location in Yambiro is rural, quiet, and carries the scent of eucalyptus and mountain air. I found the local community to be incredibly welcoming, and the walk to and from town is a delightful ritual—a great way to stretch the legs and trade nods with the locals. If the weather turns or your grocery haul is too heavy, a reliable bus runs throughout the day. It's a cheap, efficient lifeline that connects you directly to the main bus terminal for strikes toward Quito or beyond.

Room Review: Flying Donkey Hostal

When I'm not playing house in the hills, I'm looking for a base of operations that balances affordability with utility. The Flying Donkey Hostal hits that sweet spot. They offer very reasonable rates, with options ranging from social dorms to surprisingly comfortable private rooms for those of us who value our "cave time."

Hostel life is the backbone of solo travel. It's where intelligence is gathered and stories are swapped. The Flying Donkey facilitates this with a solid shared kitchen and an owner who frequently stocks the place with fresh fruit for breakfast. It's the kind of place where you can maintain your independence while still having a safety net of friendly faces.

The crown jewel here is undoubtedly the rooftop deck and bar. It's the perfect perch to decompress with a cold drink while watching the sunset hit the surrounding peaks. Located just a short walk from the famous Plaza de Ponchos, it's a tactical location for any traveler. Between the friendly staff and the logistics support (they'll happily arrange airport transport), this is a spot I'll be returning to when I need a roof over my head in the heart of the action.
