The Strategic Retreat: Logistics of the Andes Arbitrage
Survival is a game of logistics. After Hurricane Helene, the math in North Carolina stopped adding up. I didn't just lose a roof; I lost the infrastructure of a life. The river claimed four cords of seasoned firewood, a two-month supply of canned goods, a freezer of venison, and virtually every household possession I owned, including my boots and winter gear.
The final removal of wreckage in the wake of the river's surge.
The Economic Pivot: How the Arbitrage Works
For over a decade, I have practiced a tradition I call "Andes Arbitrage." This protocol is a tactical necessity designed to protect the spread between guide earnings and the cost of existence.
1. Generate Capital
Work the high-intensity summer season as a professional guide on the Ocoee River.
2. Protect the Spread
Migrate to Latin America during the off-season to lower the cost of existence.
3. Arbitrage
Living on less than $1,000/month multiplies the purchasing power of seasonal earnings.
2024-2026 Operational Route
Following the disaster, I followed my normal migration but it became the "Hard Reset" via overland bus travel. This tactical migration spanned Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. As of February 2026, I have established my base of operations in Ecuador. Every cent saved here by avoiding the high cost of a North Carolina winter is a cent directed toward rebuilding the "home place."
Not having a home makes everything more difficult and expensive. Just eating becomes more difficult and expense. Maintaining a healthy diet becomes harder without a kitchen.
