Which Vaccines Are Recommended For International Travel?

Which vaccines are recommended for travel?

The recommended vaccinations for international travel are typically grouped into three categories: Routine, Recommended, and Required. For any international trip, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider or a travel medicine specialist four to six weeks before you leave, as some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time. I prefer to visit my local health department in Asheville; not only is the price better but the staff are more competent.

This is a breakdown of the most commonly recommended vaccines for international travelers (consult your doctor or local travel clinic):

  1. Routine Vaccines (Most Important)
These protect against diseases that are rare in some developed countries but may be circulating worldwide. You should ensure these are current for all international travel:

    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): Highly contagious, and outbreaks still occur globally.

    • Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (Tdap): A booster is generally recommended every 10 years.

    • Polio: An adult booster dose may be recommended for travel to certain countries, as cases are still being reported globally.

    • Influenza (Flu) & COVID-19: Recommended based on current public health guidelines and seasonality. If your vacation is only a week or two either of these could ruin your experience.

    • Varicella (Chickenpox): If you have not had the disease or been vaccinated.

  2. Recommended Travel Vaccines (Based on Destination & Activity)
These are advised for most travelers going to developing countries or regions with poorer sanitation, especially in Central/South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

    • Hepatitis A: Contaminated food and water.

    • Typhoid Fever: Contaminated food and water. Travel to South Asia, Africa, and parts of Central/South America, especially those staying with friends/relatives or visiting rural areas.

    • Hepatitis B: Blood and body fluids (sexual contact, medical procedures, tattoos/piercings). Important for long-term travelers, those working in healthcare, or travelers engaging in higher-risk activities.

    • Rabies: Animal bites/scratches (especially dogs, bats). Travelers who will be working with animals, engaging in outdoor activities, or on long-term trips to areas where rabies is common.

  3. Required/Specialty Vaccines (For Specific High-Risk Areas)
These are required for entry to certain countries or highly recommended due to very high regional risk:

    • Yellow Fever (YFV): Required for entry into certain countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, especially if arriving from an area with Yellow Fever risk. You must get this vaccine at an approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Clinic.

    • Meningococcal (Meningitis): Required for visitors to Saudi Arabia during the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Also recommended for travel to the 'meningitis belt' of Sub-Saharan Africa.

    • Japanese Encephalitis (JE):Recommended for long-term travelers or those spending significant time outdoors/in rural areas of Asia.

    • Cholera: Generally not needed for most tourists, but may be recommended for aid workers or those traveling to active outbreak areas.

These are only the common recommendations. Consult with your doctor for professional medical advice.
