Structure of the Ecuadorian Government

The Republic of Ecuador is a unitary, centralized, and decentralized state with a presidential system. Its structure is defined by the 2008 Constitution (Englih translation). Unlike many countries with only three branches, Ecuador officially operates with five Branches of Government.

  1. Executive Branch (Funci?n Ejecutiva)

    • Head: The President of the Republic (currently elected for a four-year term).

    • Role: Acts as the Head of State and Head of Government, responsible for public administration, national defense, and foreign policy.

    • Composition: Includes the President, Vice President, and Cabinet Ministers.

  2. Legislative Branch (Funci?n Legislativa)

    • Head: The National Assembly (Asamblea Nacional).

    • Role: Creates and amends laws, supervises the actions of the executive branch, and has the authority to impeach the President.

    • Composition: A unicameral (single-chamber) body of Assembly members elected from national, provincial, and overseas districts.

  3. Judicial Branch (Funci?n Judicial)

    • Head: The National Court of Justice (Corte Nacional de Justicia).

    • Role: Interprets and applies the law, ensuring justice is administered equally.

    • Composition: Composed of judges in various courts, from the national level down to the provincial level.

  4. Transparency and Social Control Branch (Funci?n de Transparencia y Control Social)

    • Role: An innovative branch designed to promote transparency, combat corruption, and guarantee accountability in public sector actions.

    • Composition: Includes:

      • The Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS)

      • The Superintendencies

      • The Office of the Comptroller General of the State (Contralor?a General del Estado)

  5. Electoral Branch (Funci?n Electoral)

    • Role: Guarantees the free, transparent, and democratic organization of electoral processes.

    • Composition: Includes:

      • The National Electoral Council (CNE)

      • The Electoral Tribunal of Disputes (TCE)
