Kings Mountain Battlefield

Photos and article by FastFred Ruddock

I took a side trip to the holiest of holy sites in the United States along my way home from the NCOM convention in Charlotte; I enjoyed a ride and chose not to wear a DOT helmet. While the choice was not without risk neither were the actions of the patriots at Kings Mountain. The blood of patriots and tories stained this battlefield and created our nation. One third of British army lead by Cornwallis was destroyed at Kings Mountain. This set the stage for the Battle of Cowpens and together these two battles made victory all but unavoidable for the American rebels. This battlefield has a fine museum with many exhibits and a movie created by the History Channel. Over 70,000 Americans gathered at this site to give thanks in 1930 and President Hoover spoke to the masses.

Wolves dug up and ate many of the tories left in shallow graves. Many tories were not given quarter. However the British previously failed to give quarter. Additionally Ferguson made the mistake of threatening the mountain men who in turn answered the patriots' call to arms. To get the full story please visit this holy battlefield in person.
