Hilo, Waterfall, and Volcanoes National Park |
June 18, 2006 |
My first day on the cruise landed me at Hilo on the big island. I failed to book and excursion but this turned out for the best. A few of great southern folks from Florida and Kentucky and I hired a local tour guide. We visited Hilo where we saw large trees planted back in the 1930's by such greats as Babe Ruth. We also visited a waterfall before heading to the Volcanoes National Park. The volcano and lava tube were both surreal and interesting. The steam vents smelled of sulfur. The Mauna Lao nut factory was an interesting side trip and the free samples were great. We also stopped by a fighting chicken farm on our way back to the ship.
