Backwoods Choppers: Deals Gap, NC

So what do you do when you are miles away from a Harley shop and a part wears out?

Well, Uncle Rock and the Slugs made the missing part. Using what was available in the backwoods the Slugs made a new primary chain adjuster shoe from a couple of Teflon cutting boards and JB weld. The only other materials purchased were one drill bit, and a hacksaw. First the cutting boards were cut into strips. Then the strips were scored prior to being adhered to one another. Next Rock used the "good" side of the old shoe as a template. The laminated block was carefully marked with an outline of the shoe. ChickenHawk and Rock then drilled holes along the outline of the part. After the out line was drilled ChickenHawk removed the excess material using a hand grinder. Finally, Rock and ChickenHawk drilled the two final holes for the bolts used to attach the part. After reassembling the Panhead Rock went for a test ride along the great North Carolina Mountain roads.

The attempt at molding a new part ran into trouble as the plastic in the mold shrank more than was anticipated however this method showed some promise.
