The Cycle of Performative Outrage

I've been thinking about a curious pattern I've noticed over the past few years. Whenever I share the realities of affordability in Latin America, a familiar type of discussion often follows.

Suddenly, people who rarely engage with the travel topic itself appear expressing passionate concern about local economies. At first, the discussion may appear to be about economics, but after watching this unfold repeatedly across my platforms, I've noticed that it often follows the same trajectory.

The conversation drifts away from affordability, travel logistics, and firsthand experiences toward U.S. immigration policy. From there, some discussions move into coded language and, eventually, openly racist remarks.

After seeing this cycle repeat enough times, I've learned to recognize it early. What begins as a conversation about travel and local realities can become something entirely different: an argument driven by stereotypes and division rather than curiosity, learning, and honest exchange.

My goal has always been to document the ground-truth realities of overland travel, local markets, and everyday life throughout Latin America. I share what I experience firsthand because travel is one of the best ways to replace assumptions with understanding.

Thoughtful disagreement is welcome. Honest questions are welcome. Different perspectives are welcome. I enjoy discussions that challenge ideas, examine evidence, and help everyone learn something new.

What isn't welcome are personal attacks, racism, xenophobia, harassment, or attempts to derail travel discussions into unrelated arguments that have nothing to do with the topic being discussed.

This community exists for people who are curious about the world and willing to engage in good faith. If you're here for honest, unfiltered travel information and a genuine exchange of ideas, I welcome your perspective. Let's have thoughtful conversations—even when we disagree.
