Lidless Tour from Western North Carolina to Poinsett BridgePhotos and article by FastFred Ruddock, October 23, 2006 I had an enjoyable yet cold ride in mountains. I passed two North Carolina State Troopers on I-26 on my way to visit Poinsett Bridge; they did not seem inclined to stop me for refusing to wear a helmet in North Carolina. The old bridge and highway to Asheville is a site to be seen; I wonder how many of my ancestors crossed this bridge. I visited the Greenville Harley Davidson Shop to leave some ABATE newsletters and speak with some locals.
Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve is located east of old U.S. Highway 25 beside Callahan Mountain Road in northern Greenville County. It is just west of the Boy Scout camp called Camp Old Indian. Visitors can reach the preserve via temporary parking on the south side of Callahan Mountain Road directly across from Poinsett Bridge. Parking and picnic areas and an interpretive walking trail are planned for the site. |
